                                                  Amerigo Vespucci

To start of the story of Amerigo Vespucci, I’m going to tell you about where he was born when he was born and all of that stuff! Well, first of all he was born in Florence, Italy, sometime near March 9th, 1454. In 1491, he moved to Seville, Spain, and became connected to a company that equipped ships for long trips. He did his job until he died in 1512.

WHAT DID HE SET OUT TO FIND?

What did he set out to find? Well, let me tell you. Amerigo Vespucci sailed out for Spain in 1499. He returned from Spain in 1500. In 1501, he sailed for Portugal. 1502 is when he returned from Portugal. Amerigo Vespucci tried to retrace Columbus’ journey. On Amerigo Vespucci’s first voyage a ship worm almost destroyed his ship, So he had to go back to Spain right away. Did I answer your question? I hope I did. To find out more of Amerigo Vespucci’s journey dive into to the part of what he actually found.

                              WHAT HE ACTUALLY FOUND

Amerigo found something different then he thought he would! Amerigo was the first person to realize that America was not connected to the continent of Asia in 1499. And then, America was named after him in 1507! And if that was not enough he found Haiti and the Dominican Republic in 1499. To overwhelm you, he also found South America too! That is a lot of finding to do! Who knows what else he would have found! Well, at least he had an adventure in all of his journeys!

How did he change the world view and/or maps?

Amerigo Vespucci was a great explorer, but how did he change the world view and maps? Amerigo Vespucci was the first person who realized that the Americas were separate from the continent of Asia. Because America sounds so much like Amerigo, America was actually named for Amerigo Vespucci in 1507 by Martin Waldseemüller. And then after that the name America was used throughout Europe. Amerigo really did change the world view and maps significantly!
